Can I stay outside the U.S. for a year or even longer while I am waiting for the outcome of my citizenship app

Moreso, I have already fulfilled the requirement of 5 years residence before applying for citizenship and have applied for my citizenship. Unfortunately, the current case processing turn out time /trend showing for citizenship application adjudication in my area is showing about 14/16 months. Any good precedential/ experienced and/or legal enlightenment would be greatly appreciated, since I obviously don't want to mess up things toward this end. Thanks very much.
